MY FAVORITE SECRET
Video 3 in my 5 part series of “Inside the World’s Most Secretive Countries” is about Eritrea 🇪🇷. Check it out and tell me what you think!
Eritrea 🇪🇷 is actually one of my favorite countries - I’ve been 2x and always felt a special joy while there. For tourists it has a very laid back atmosphere, majestic scenery, delicious food, and for a small country it is incredibly diverse, with the famous 3 seasons in 2 hours drive from the chilly mountain capital of Asmara to the scorching port of Massawa.
But while Eritrea is an underrated tourist destination with lots to offer visiting foreigners, the same cannot be said for the local population. Eritrea is the 2nd biggest source of refugees (after Syria 🇸🇾) globally. This is largely due to conscription with unlimited timeframe and low pay, lack of jobs and development, and very slow telecommunications networks to connect with the outside world.
The secretive nature largely stems from the country’s constantly defensive stance against its much larger (are more internationally backed) neighbor- Ethiopia 🇪🇹 with whom its had decades of war for independence. Luckily a peace agreement was signed between the two sides last year, with the UAE 🇦🇪 mitigating 💪🏽
Overall, I have a deep sense of love for this gorgeous but complicated place. I explain much of this in the video. I hope you enjoy it!
