The barbell back squat can be a great exercise to incorporate in a training program. The two main variations of the squat are the high and low bar squat. The main difference is the positioning of the bar on the back with some minor differences when it comes to positioning and muscle activation. ⁣

There is a time and place for both of these variations in a training program. The main deciding factor should be choosing the variation that allows for safe execution of the movement. There are many ways to regress the movement if the barbell version is too difficult (check out a post we made previously). ⁣

You've been waiting for the right time for too long. Being lazy, avoiding the tough stuff and hoping it will all go away, is the reason why your life gets harder and more complicated each day.

I’m naturally energetic and quasi-restless, always in motion. But for many years I was a relatively inactive choir kid, not because I didn’t like to move but because I hated sports because competition has always made me uncomfortable. In eighth grade my parents made me pick up a sport, so I started rock climbing, riding my bike up our hill, and doing my mom’s abs video. I started going to the a gym and running and cross country, which later led to long distance running. The movement that started as a welcome addition to my sedentary life, began to feel more mandatory than optional, more stifling than fun. The freedom of moving my body soon turned into a never-ending, never-optional grind.

But throughout my exercise addiction there were moments where I felt strong, powerful, adventurous, and yes, happy. The endorphin rush after a sweaty gym session, gulping down ice water after a run in the hills behind my house in the heat of summer, the satisfaction of lifting more weight in a workout class than many of the grown men in the class, the feeling of accomplishment and relief that encompasses you the minute you cross the finish line of a marathon.

Recovering from exercise addiction has been the hardest part of recovery for me because there is so. much. gray. Movement I loved became clouded with obsession, overexertion, and guilt. I lost sight of the positive sense of ownership and connection with one’s body that exercise can bring, replacing it with a frustration and shame-based “why can’t my body do/be something else?!” .

Easing into a healthier relationship with exercise takes time...and patience and forgiveness. A reorienting of priorities, a (much-needed) subversion of your identity as “exerciser” to your other—more important and more holistic—identities. But being able to enjoy and appreciate moving in your body, without guilt or shame or obsession—whether that means climbing mountains or walking your dog, running the hills behind your house or lifting weights or jumping on the trampoline with kids—is so worth it.

We are going to document the whole rehab process of our patient who suffered a distal radial fracture after coming of his mountain bike. (See x-ray)⁣

Our patient has had a volar locking plate fitted, which is a popular implant for surgical management of unstable distal radial fractures.⁣
⁣
He has just finished his brief 2-week period of immobilislation for wound-healing, which will now be followed by a period of instructed hand therapy with a removable wrist splint used for support.⁣
⁣
Complications reported for the volar locking plate have decreased with newer low-profile plate designs; however, they still include volar tendon irritation and/or rupture and median neuropathy. ⁣
⁣
⁣
Keep an out out for rehab videos, progress and his return to getting back on the bike.⁣

The more effort he puts in with his rehab exercises the better his recovery and return to cycling.⁣

The workshop will be led by Jonathan Hebert, LCMT & Licensed Personal Trainer at Blue Sky Physical Therapy. He will begin at 9:15 am with a guided full body warm-up routine. After the warm-up, participants will have independent use of the gym space and equipment under Jonathan's supervision to develop personalized corrective exercises and stretches for their individual needs. You will have the opportunity to learn specifically designed movements, stretches, and postural corrections to help promote healthy tissues and to avoid injury. This workshop is appropriate for people of all ages and all activity & ability levels. .

I'm a big fan of intermittent fasting (aka. time restricted eating). As a binge eater who constantly struggles to avoid overeating. The longer I wait after waking to have my first meal, the better. By having a cut off time in the evening, I avoid late night snacking when I am tired and my hunger hormones increase. The first time I did it, I kept my calories the same and did experience accelerated fat loss. Was that due to a longer fasting period and better hormone production? or did I sleep better and move more than the previous few weeks when I was consuming the same number of calories over a longer period. I don't know. If you give it a go, don't expect it to work miracles, but it wont do any harm either, and who knows, it might be something you enjoy as you find it easier to hit your calories.
