Argentinian artist Mirtha Dermisache (1940–2012) wrote dozens of books, hundreds of letters and postcards, and countless texts. Not a single one was legible, yet, in their promixity to language, they all resonate with a mysterious potential for meaning. Using ink on paper, Dermisache invented an array of graphic languages, each with their own unique lexical and syntactic structures. Some resemble a child’s scrawl; others feel like nets or knots or transcriptions of seismic waves. Praised by Roland Barthes in the early 70s for the “extreme intelligence of the theoretical problems related to writing that [her] work entails,” Dermisache’s graphisms suggest both an abstract “essence of writing” and a concrete democratization of written forms. #mirthadermisache @sigliopress @uglyducklingpresse

#malba #musemalba #mirthadermisache #verboamerica

My epistolary review co-written with the poet-philosopher #LewisFreedman on #ReneeGladman & #MirthaDermisache was published in Tripwire Journal! Loved the chance to think about their work more deeply over several months last year... the notion of building up a language/architecture/world somehow autonomously is ever-more important to me as I continue to learn more about urban planning 😯 also love the cover by #OmarPimienta “Collapsing Liberty”

Beautiful art by Mirtha Dermisache (Argentina), 1970. She created these writings that look actual handwritten words but in fact they are invented.
She wanted to reflect on the act of (re)cognition, meaning and sharing complexity through marks on a page.
As Argentina moved towards a dictatorship, her unreadable writing was seen as a way of resisting state censorship through illegibility.

‘Modern Andovian Literature’ by Argentinian artist Mirtha Dermisache. Asemic writing is an abstract art form which fuses image and text in a wordless semantic form that has no meaning and is left open for the reader to fill in and interpret. #mirthadermisache #imageandtext #visualpoetry #superculture

🐚Days out with pre-schoolers 🐚
We went to @tate The Tate Modern today, with one of my dearest friends. Her son is 8 years old so we knew we needed somewhere indoors and with space for the children to run and feel free, including my speed-crawling 9mo.
The Tate modern was the PERFECT place to go - the turbine hall is safe, warm and an immediately attractive place to RUN AND RUN, and you know that everyone there is child friendly so I didn’t get one disapproving look at the squeals or chasing games.
We took the children around the #magicrealism exhibition which included works by artists varying from #marcelduchamp to #soniadelauney to #mirthadermisache
Of course much of it was rather complex to understand, but the variety of stimulation and subjects to discuss make it a great thing to do even with small ones. My little one was entranced by lights and sounds, people and movement. All very beautiful and he was enthralled.
Lunch was delicious and the restaurant has lots of space for big buggies (🙋🏽‍♀️ mine!) and children who can’t sit still (🙋🏽‍♀️, again mine! Wonderfully active!) The river views gave yet more subject matter to discuss and the outside space was just as great to run around in as the #turbinehall
We had a perfectly exhausting day, discovered new words “turbine”, “installation”, “exhibition”, and ran and ran and ran. Plus - free parking on a Sunday! 🙌🏽 #montessori #homeeducation #london #tatemodern #londondaysout #art #artforkids #homeschooling #homeed

Mirtha Dermisache, 21-02-1940 – 05-01-2012
On January 5th we remember Argentinian artist Mirtha Dermisache, one of the artist included in #PoeticBoomBoom. Her asemic writing sought to free the lines from their tether to representation. In the exhibition at #GalleriedellePrigioni we show 'Newsletter', 1999, an illegible writing where Dermisache, drawing upon the very essence of writing, sets it free from any possible meaning. With her works the artist achieves a pure poetical action where the visitor, through a free interpretation, makes sense of what is written.

Poetic Boom Boom
An exhibition about Visual Poetry
Gallerie delle Prigioni, curator Mattia Solari, Treviso till 07/04/2019
The works by these three artists present different forms of alterations in the use of writing; there is the forced repetition of Irma Blank, the oneiric transmutation of Mirtha Dermisache and the mechanical modifications of Raffaella della Olga.

Books of 2018 - 4/31: Mirtha Dermisache, Selected Writings (Ugly Duckling Presse/ Siglio). Dermisache, who died in 2012, was Argentinian; the ‘writings’ are a series of texts and two books from the 1970s; the ‘words’ mysterious and precise. She’s the Liz Fraser of the printed world. #mirthadermisache @uglyducklingpresse @sigliopress

My highlights from @friezeartfair London: SO much gratitude to Henrique Faria Gallery @hffabuenosaires for sharing the extraordinary work of Mirtha Dermisache with us. I had an extremely strong reaction to all of her work but this book I absolutely longed to take home with me. To have the opportunity to spend time with it, to turn those pages, journey. Sadly this isn’t possible, but I was extremely grateful that you allowed me to experience (and video) the flow, journey and dialogue across the pages. This was such a very special and experience. Two weeks on and my longing has only grown. The memory of seeing and feeling those pages turn is even more precious. #gratitude

Dermisache’s works on paper examine the boundaries of written language and the transmission of information. She takes the media associated with everyday writing, such as books, newspapers and letters, and subverts their functionality through the creation of written languages without the alphabetic signifiers traditionally used to convey meaning. Roland Barthes, in a letter to the artist in 1972, called her works “illegible writing”, reaffirming Dermisache’s intention to explore the idea, or, the essence, of the self-referential act of writing. Diario No ̊ 1 Año 1 (1972) contains the columned format and linearly written “text” as commonly seen in any newspaper, but inspection of the work’s content leads the viewer to realize that the signs are the content, liberated from typical definitions of meaning. •••
